BCP is recruiting a Conservation Coordinator (CO), the location will be Mongu, under the Kafue-Zambezi Community Forest Project (KZCFP). The CO will be directly responsible for the coordination of REDD+ project activities as they relate to conservation and biodiversity-focused activities in Western and Southern Provinces. The primary responsibility of the Conservation Coordinator is to ensure conservation is enhanced through Law enforcement efforts, key stakeholder engagement, and land management activities. The job title is focused on ensuring positive impacts towards biodiversity, conservation, forest protection and enhanced and improved conservation practices. This is a field-based position that requires a wide range of field-based skills in rural and remote locations. The role reports directly to the KZCFP Project Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Implement strategic plans related to areas of responsibility, contributing to BCP’s overall vision and mission.
- Prepare and execute operational plans with the Conservation Manager (CM) and the KZCFP Project Coordinator (PC) for all Western and Southern Provinces conservation activities.
- Ensure effective reporting by using and synchronizing monitoring systems like ODK, SMART, and Earth Ranger, and task management tools such as Smart Sheets, Toggle, and PowerBI.
- Support joint forest patrols, anti-poaching activities, and encroachment resolution in collaboration with stakeholders (Traditional Leaders, FD, DNPW) and other BCP teams such as engagement and agriculture.
- Oversee and implement all SOPs, company policies, and reporting systems, and provide staff refresher training as and when required to ensure compliance.
- Develop annual work plans with clear priorities and ensure efficient execution and reporting through the use of task management tools.
- Coordinate and provide logistical support for conservation staff, including deployment planning post patrol de-briefing, inspections, and reports as required.
- Assist in field data collection, analysis, and reporting; achieving yearly biodiversity monitoring goals in collaboration with the Carbon and Biodiversity departments.
- Plan and implement biodiversity surveys, including transects, aerial surveys, eDNA, and camera traps.
- Foster collaboration with conservation partners in the landscape to optimize efforts.
- Manage infrastructure and equipment, ensuring regular maintenance and 100% functionality through inventories and ensuring that all equipment is on a regular maintenance schedule through coordination with Logistics and HR.
- In collaboration with the Conservation/Biodiversity Officers, develop and oversee the implementation of Sector Operations Plans that guide security systems and land management of Community Forest Management Group (CFMG) forest areas in collaboration with local communities and partners.
- Support and coordinate efforts to reduce encroachments across designated CFMG forest areas in Western and Southern Provinces.
- Oversee the development and execution of fire management and burn plans in all sectors, including regular refresher training for fire marshals. Reports as required.
- Ensure stakeholder meetings are held quarterly to monitor progress and foster accountability.
Skills
- Minimum of a Degree or Master’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Community Development or any relevant field.
- 5 years of relevant work experience in a similar field or management position.
- Demonstrated experience in project management
- Strong people skills with communication capabilities in written and spoken English and above all, local chiefdom languages.
- Strong planning and coordination skill sets and experience working with government stakeholders.
- Excellent facilitation skills and application of Participatory Rural Appraisal/Participatory Learning and Action Methodologies and Tools.
- Strong leadership traits and time management skills.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office suite, GPS, ODK, and other Android device applications.
- Advanced alliance building and collaborative skills.
- Excellent report writing.
- Management, administrative, and organizational skills.
Must display the following traits:
